Christian Counseling Durham, NC: He’s a Mind Regulator!

Jesus Over Therapy overwritten by a correction of Jesus AND Therapy with Blog Title "He's a Mind Regulator!"

I’ve had clients and church members alike, tell me they don’t need therapy, they need Jesus. I’m here to tell you that I thought the same thing until I found myself spiraling and in need of both of them.

Maybe you do want Jesus over Therapy. I believe that God is able and willing to make you whole. But, I also know a God that took up flesh to work the miracle of salvation. He could have done it with a word, that’s proven in the creation narrative. Instead, God takes up residence in a body and works out healing and salvation through his life, death, burial, and resurrection. To me, this suggests that therapy (among other things) can be a tool that Jesus works through. Could it be that God has made a way for you through the provision of Christian Counseling in Durham, NC? Might working with a Black Therapist in Durham, NC, be the very way that Christ makes himself known to you as a Mind Regulator? I’ve tried him for myself, but I’ve also tried Christian Counseling in Durham, NC with a Black Therapist of my own, and I wouldn’t take that from my journey. So, as for me and my house, we’ll take boffum(read: both of them for those that don’t know ebonics)!!! In case you're in the back and I didn’t say it loud enough, turn to your neighbor and say “I’ll take boffum.”

In this series, we will explore Jesus as a Mind-Regulator, a Fence, a Rock-in-a-Weary-Land, and a Heart-Fixer. I look forward to chatting with you via the Blog.

I might get a little churchy cause yes, I am a Black Therapist in Durham, NC, but I’m also a preacher so every now in then I feel it in my “shanana”! ;-) (IYKYK). Let’s get started with our first dose of boffum - Jesus AND Therapy. He is certainly a mind regulator.

Can Jesus be your Mind Regulator?

You grew up hearing your elders proclaim that Jesus is a Mind-Regulator. As you've come to know God for yourself, you’ve embraced this though sometimes it doesn’t always feel true to your experience. As you search for a Christian Counselor in Durham, NC, you’ve been looking for someone who can both understand this rich heritage of faith you’ve been given and help you see God revealed as Mind-Regulator in your life. As a Black Therapist in Durham, NC who values the integration of faith and mental health, I want to help walk you through the ways that you can know God as a mind regulator, not just at Church on Sunday, not just on your knees beside your bed, but in the therapy room too.

“Mind Regulator, He’s a Mind Regulator!” - Song: Nobody by Tye Tribbett

What evidence do we have that Jesus is a mind regulator and how can working with me as a Black Therapist in Durham, NC help you walk in your healing? The word of God reminds us that God will keep us in perfect peace if we keep our minds stayed on him (Isaiah 26:3). Perfect peace is not predicated on perfect circumstances. The interesting thing about Isaiah 26:3 is that the word “perfect” has nothing to do with our English understanding of perfect. This verse in its original language uses the same root word, šālôm (Shalom) for both “perfect” and “peace”...so more accurately it’s meant to convey deep and abiding peace, complete peace. “Peace, Peace” May you have “peace, peace” even if things are not perfect. Christian Counseling in Durham, NC can help you talk out your circumstances and get more aligned with this peace that God has gifted you. Therapy doesn’t take away the circumstances, but it does allow you to learn to cope, change, and navigate that which is in your control and then practice letting go of what is not. Sometimes we need a toolkit to help us learn how to do that so that we can apply the word.

Peace that Surpasses Understanding

Sometimes our peace does not make sense. As they say, All hell might be breaking loose, but you are still here. But have you ever had the experience of “faking it until you make it”? Have you ever felt the pressure to smile and lift your hands, but you barely have the strength to get out of bed and raise a washcloth to your body? Sometimes we pray for peace that surpasses understanding but we don’t realize that there is better available to us. You can pray, that’s great. But you can also put some feet on your prayers and work through the trauma, transitions, grief, depression, or anxiety. God will not be mad at you. Get you some therapy and let Jesus lead you through so that your feet might truly be set upon a new rock, and that smile you wear can be real.

He Regulates us by Renewing Our Minds

God expects us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). This is where we partner with God. Yes, God is able. But are you willing to step down into the pool while it is being stirred? Are you willing to take up your mat and walk towards the resources God provides? God renews our minds when we surrender. We must also do the work to renew our minds. Who else better to help you work on renewing your mind than a Christian Counselor in Durham, NC?
