Faith-based therapy from your Mommy Minister

Christian Counseling Durham, NC

You have searched up and down to find a therapist that has the clinical training and qualifications to meet your mental health needs, and you have found plenty. But you also want someone who will hold who you are as a spiritual being as well. You want to integrate your psychological and spiritual wellness in meaningful ways. You also don’t want to have to explain everything about your faith tradition and practices. You need someone well informed with how faith, religion, and culture intersect and how they impact who you are in the world.

You are a person of faith and you want to integrate your spirituality into your wellness journey.

You may have even experienced mental health stigma in your church or faith community and you want to know that it is okay to pray, go to therapy, and take the medication too (I’m not a medication provider, but I do recommend clients seek out medication providers when clinically relevant). Maybe you have been hurt by church or experienced religious trauma that has impacted your psychological well-being. You want to process some of these experiences and heal. Maybe you have been deconstructing your faith and are adjusting to seeing and doing life through a new lens.

Hey, I’m Kadeisha and I am a Black, Christian therapist in Durham, NC.

…with me, you don’t have to check your faith at the door(or the virtual waiting room)...in fact…I found God in therapy and you can too! I am an ordained Christian minister and yes of course, a psychotherapist. It is my joy to invite God’s spirit into our work when it is important to and relevant to my clients. If you want someone who has taken the journey of figuring out how to love Jesus and accept and embrace the healing God sends through mental health providers, I’ll walk with you! I’ll take the journey with you to discovering that Jesus doesn’t only show up at church or in your quiet time, but also in the therapy room too as you become more self aware, emotionally healthy, and mentally well. No one is exempt from the lows and highs of life; wondering how I know? Because I am a wounded healer, and as a person of faith who has sat on the couch, I am not exempt from mental health concerns nor am I sinful if I experience them. Because I am a wounded healer, not THE healer, I am honored to partner with you and God on your journey towards wellness. I truly believe that therapy is a sacred space and I am honored to create an opening for you to feel seen, heard and understood. You want to thrive MIND, body, and soul, and you need someone who can speak to that and not shy away from speaking your faith language. You want a therapist that is spiritually receptive and welcoming of God’s Spirit. Your mental health and wellness journey does not have to lay your faith aside, and your faith journey does not have to lay your mental health and wellness aside.

FAQS

  • Do you only work with Christians? I work with clients of all faith and religious identities including those that do not have a particular spiritual orientation. I have experience working with Christians and in interfaith settings and clients that do have a spiritual orientation, often find it helpful to be able to bring this part of themselves to therapy so that they can be their fullest most authentic expression of themselves.

  • Does this mean every session will talk about God? That depends on what you bring in. If you want to talk about God in every session sure, and if you never want to mention God and just want the comfort of having someone who does understand your faith identity, that’s cool too. I only integrate faith and spirituality at YOUR request.

  • You use a lot of language about Black people and cultural identities. I don’t identify as black, what about me? The simple answer is that this world is anti-black and as a Black identified woman, I begin my own journey of antiracism and anti-oppressive practices by standing with my people. I enjoy working with folks of ALL identities, however, I amplify black voices and create space for black people because the world is still struggling to do so in meaningful ways. It is important to me to center my space with Black folks in mind and in so doing it is not my aim to leave anyone out but rather to center the voices of Black folks, because when we matter and when space is created for those of us on the margins, we will all be better. I want everyone to feel comfortable in my virtual space and I do that by sitting on the margins with my people first. What might that mean for you if you do not identify as Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color(BIPOC), it means that I as a black female therapist will always hold that our identities are in the therapy room and I will assess, sit with, and hold us accountable to talking about our identities regardless of if some of those identities are shared. If you are a white person seeking therapy with me I believe you will find work with me to be a gentle, encouraging  space of growth and challenge…just as my BIPOC clients do.

Put some feet on your prayers. It’s Jesus and Therapy for me!
